Broncs opens season with shutout win over Tonopah

TONOPAH - Parker running back David Shatto scored twice and Andrew Hernandez connected with Mitchell Newman for a 21-yard scoring strike as the Broncs defeated the Phoenix of Tonopah Valley, 21-0, Friday.
Shatto had six carries on the day, for a total of 55 yards and a team-leading 9.2 yards per carry. His first score came at 3:30 into the third period from four yards out, capping a 15-yard, three play scoring drive.
His second score came in the fourth period, the final play on a five play, 45-yard drive for the Broncs. Shatto popped the ball into the end zone from six yards out.
Hernandez completed just one of his four passing attempts in the game but it was good for a 21-yard touchdown strike to Newman just 1:37 into the game in the first period.
Place kicker Alfonso Lamas was perfect, going 3-for-3 in extra point attempts.
Hernandez led the Broncs with 83 rushing yards on 12 carries, followed by David Shatto's 55 yards, Tyler Eddy with 41 yards on five carries, Cory Honomichl had one run for 30 yards, Ryan Shatto gained 25 yards on two carries, Newman ran seven times for 15 yards, Anthony Diaz had one carry for eight yards and Mario DeLeon ran once for three yards.
Louis Golding was incomplete on his lone pass attempt but he did pull in one interception on defense, returning the ball 41 yards.
Defensively, the Broncs limited the Phoenix to nine first downs, 36 yards passing and just 119 rushing yards on 40 attempts.
The Shatto brothers were team leaders on defense; with David posting eight tackles - six unassisted - while Ryan had six tackles - five unassisted.
Newman had five tackles, Louis Golding and Diaz four each, Ricardo Panuco, Anthony Honadick, Nick Baldenegro and Hernandez each with three, Micah Harper, Jeff Stewart, Cody Hill and Eddy each with two and Mario Walrod, Chris Tahbo and Honomichl with one tackle each.
Both teams were even in takeaways, fumbling the ball away twice each and both giving up one interception.
The Broncs are home for this week's game, Friday at Joe Bush Stadium against Blythe, Calif. Palo Verde.
